Nitesh V. Chawla, the Frank M. Freimann Collegiate Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and director of both the Interdisciplinary Center of Network Science and Applications, and the Data, Inference, Analytic and Learning Lab at the University of Notre Dame, has been selected by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) to receive the society’s 2015 Outstanding Early Career Award.
The award, which was established in 2010, recognizes an outstanding young scientist or engineer under the age of 40 who has contributed to the advancement of theory, technologies, and applications of computational intelligence through inventions, new technologies, innovative technical developments, new product implementations, or the management of innovative product design or production processes. An honorarium and certificate will be presented at a CIS-sponsored conference in 2015.
Chawla’s area of research is data mining, machine learning, and network science. A central theme of his research is “big data for the common good.” He is also at the frontier of interdisciplinary applications with innovative work in healthcare analytics, climate, and environmental and network science. His research in data-driven personalized healthcare is focused on improving patient-centered diseases diagnoses and management toward wellness.
A faculty member since 2007, Chawla has been the recipient of multiple national awards for research and teaching innovation, including a National Academy of Engineers New Faculty Fellowship, IBM Watson Faculty Award, IBM Big Data and Analytics Faculty Award, and a number of best paper awards and nominations. He has received the University’s Rodney F. Ganey Award and been named in the Michiana Forty Under 40 in recognition of his contributions to personalized healthcare and the common good by collaborating with local community organizations. He has received various University teaching accolades, twice being named the recipient of the outstanding teaching awards. He also serves on a number of prestigious editorial boards and organizing/program committees for top-tier conferences. He is a Fellow of the Reilly Center for Science Technology and Values, a Fellow of the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, a program lead in the Environmental Change Initiative, and director of the ND-GAIN Index. He is also a co-founder of Aunalytics, Inc., a start-up focused on big data and analytics, housed at Innovation Park at Notre Dame.
